PET BUYERS
BE PREPARED and INFORMED
Are you looking for a truly beautiful, exotic, healthy, and outgoing bengal kitten or retired young adult? Do you want to know how to truly be successful in raising an exotic feline? There are many people more than willing to sell you a kitten, but what are you truly in-store for? What comes after you walk out the door with your new bundle of joy?
HERE are some things to think about before you make this committment. You could ask yourself ..."What should I do to.....
__keep my kitty in the house and out of danger (kitten-proofing) including out of reach of children who must be monitored with a small animal.
Who can I go to with questions after I bring my kitten home?
Do I have a good veterinarian or
how do I find one?
CHOOSING A BREEDER/kitten
DO NOT assume anything when considering a breeder or any person which you may or may not adopt from.
Don't be fooled by "smokin' deals". IT is easy for almost anyone who loves animals to walk into the trap of, "Oh, I can "Fix" whatever is wrong with this kitty". (If only it were that easy) It is "Buyer Beware" like anything else, only there are no returns and/or no refunds when buying a live animal, and the bottom line is you have only what you walk out the door with; so make sure to read all contracts carefully, and make a veterinary appt. immediately. By law, in Arizona, you have the right to all medical information pertaining to that specific kitten or cat. This includes vaccination, deworming and any other treatments or tests, and the dates and drug information. Everything you walk out with must support you in court, as that is your only recourse for illness if the party won't work with you within the guidelines of their contract.
The bottom line is EDUCATE yourself before you even set foot in a room containing bengal kittens or any kittens. Many people purchase animals based on emotions with little to no information. I ask people, "Was the cattery clean? Were the litterboxes free of loose fecal material, were their eyes, noses, ears clear of material or sores? Did the owner show you where all the adults were kept, how they were kept? 1/2 said they didnt notice or pay attention. Was this important? You decide, but don't set yourself up. IF you see or hear flags, listen with your intellect and not your emotions.
By doing the above you may avoid so much trouble and financial loss for yourself and your family. Buying emotionally also reinforces backyard breeding. Mill-type breeders are only interested in a quick dollar to reimburse themselves for the animals they purchased from an unsuspecting responsible breeder, or to line their pockets with a little extra spending money. The lack of appropriate care they provide these beautiful creatures, and the dishonest information they provide naive buyers is truly sad. They rely on your emotions and lack of experience especially if the animal is obviously sick and or living in filth and confined, and they all have similar stories to sell you. If nothing else works, they hope you'll rescue it for $200-$300 or best offer. It's what you don't see in some of those places that's really scary.
Integrity is not a given no matter where you look; so look for signs of "in"-congruency. Does everything feel right or am I just a softy for a cute spotted kitten ? TAKE your time in making a decision. If you are feeling pressured by the "That's exactly like the "one" I'm after". You can always make a minimal deposit for a 24hour hold and sleep on it. Better to lose a deposit then have buyer's remorse.
No, we don't always get what we pay for, but we should and we can ! If we take the time to learn what we can prior to a final decision, we can avoid depriving ourselves of choices. This helps prevent easily placing ourselves in a position to settle for far less than we deserve. And remember, when you think you know enough, or you think you know it all, set your ego aside and honor your life and the life of these lovely, amazing creatures, and think again. I personally must do this all the time because I have made some emotional and ego-based decisions. I can tell you first-hand, the price each time for myself and my family was very high (and very, very, expensive as well).
Thank you for taking the time to read the above. My hope is that you find it helpful. It is very helpful to me and my babies if you have read it and thought it through. Why? Because I really care about the success and happiness of my kittens and cats, and their adopting families.
